My Camera: Canon XSi

Basic camera care tips wanted

I got my XSi tonight, but due to some weird circumstances (going to return it un-opened tomorrow and have parent re-buy it with American Express card, so it's covered in case of damage or theft) I'm not going to be able to use it until tomorrow.
Basically, since this is my first dSLR, and I've been looking forward to it forever, I would really like to take the best care of my camera.
If anyone could give me ANY tips or suggestions, things they'd wish they'd known when they got their camera, I'd really appreciate it. Meaning, how to care for the camera and lens themselves, not how to take the pics themselves.
Basically, feel free to assume that I don't know the first thing about camera care. Seriously, any advice would be much appreciated.
thanks everyone! I'll post up my first pics tomorrow night when I finally get to open the damn thing!!

always carry it in a good camera bag.
don't change your lens where it is might get dust in it.
clean your lenses with a fine cleaning fabric.
do not try to clean your sensor yourself take it to a camera store.
get filter for your lenses.
use neck or hand strap all the time.
don't put it on places where it might fall down or get wet.
i will add more if anything else comes to my mind...
and congrats with the new camera...

I only have the "kit" lens for now, 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens, won't have another for a while...

which filter will be best for my (1) lens? Do UV lenses distort photos?

get a uv filter for sure. i always have uv filter on the lenses. depending on what you wanna do you can get different filters like polarizer etc...
you should check adorama or b&h for different filters..
Jayt told me about this filter and i am happy with it.

yeah but I don't have much $$ to buy another lens. If there's another lens ya think is pretty versatile and will be useful to me for the first couple months of using my camera (until I can afford more), please by all means let me know what you think would be a better buy. thanks

oh, sorry, meant to say I wouldn't spend the money on a filter for that kit lens.

But, good deals are to be had on craigslist. You can find lots of 28-135mm IS lenses on CL.

cool, thank you. again, like I said, I'm just getting into higher end digital photography, so this all is fairly new to me, UV filters, etc.
Are filters primarily for high-end lenses, for which you want to extend/protect life, or to keep dust off, or both?
btw the kit less is IS, as well, although I have no doubt it's Canon's entry level lens...
