wtf is hdr?

Someone explain to me what hdr is and how it works please.

It is taking multiple exposures, each exposure a exposing a different part of the picture, to create one single unifiably exposed picture

so basically its multiple pics using different exposures combined into a single image using pshop or someshit? cool. i'd need a tripod for that so its beyond my talent for sure atm.
