Replacement recommendation?

After years of faithful service, hiking, biking, fishing etc... I dropped my trusty Canon G1 and apparently scrambled it beyond repair. This did not make me happy...

I haven't kept up with what's avail out there since I had no plans for replacing or upgrading my camera... What do you recommend for a replacement? I'd like to stay with something reasonably compact and under $500... It will get hauled around a lot, on hiking and backpacking trips, cross-country skiing, canoe trips, and on bike trips as well... Yes, I like all that outdoor stuff...

Thanks in advance, Guy

i've heard a lot of good things concerning the durability of olympus' compact cameras. might be worth checking out.
