need some help - d80 won't autofocus...

got a co-worker who's nikon d80 has stopped autofocusing. have tried everything from resetting the camera to recycling the battery to cleaning the lens contacts. even double checking to see if the af switches on both the lens and body are in the right place.

unfortunately he doesn't have a second lens to see if it's a lens issue, but other than trying on a different lens at the store, does anyone else have any suggestions?

been scouring the internet, and haven't found anything other than sending it in, but that would be the last resort.

I had the same problem when I was out on a shoot the other day with my rebel xt. First and only time I've ever come across that prob.

Scared the crap out of me. I ended up just doing every little thing possible, even the things that didn't make sense for troubleshooting purposes.

I had the camera flip up the mirror, as you would to clean the sensor. Turned it off and back on, and AF started to work just fine again. Do not ask me the logic in that one... lol

I'd run out to the store and throw another lens on, that will quickly give you the answer.

Make sure the lens is fully clicked into place on the camera body. I had that happen to mine and I was freaking out.
