any idea what those track mark looking things are on the tree in the first pic? is that utah?

That first pic was taken on top of Tea Pot Rock, in Sedona, AZ
I am assuming they are hash marks from a hiker marking the number of times they have climbed the trail. Or a bored individual with much time and much to think about. either way it was quite interesting to see
