Working on exposures

i've been working on my contrasts and exposure lately, got these over bellingham last night and thought they were decent

the last one is hdr, don't know why, but i thought i might try it the other 2 are straight from the camera

My Camera: Canon XSi

what kind of software is necessary for HDR? I understand you need a tripod, and take a couple pics with different metering spots, but what do you use to combine them all and such?

i use photoshop cs3, i know a lot of people use photomatrix (i think?)

i'm still working on HDR, i havn't gotten any amazing HDR's yet. but it's coming, it's coming

I use Adobe Photoshop CS3.
