Help editing a few photos...

I'm colorblind.
I am 100% new to PP in dig. photography, and don't have any programs to do so.
I am going to be sharing these pictures with some other friends as a gift of sorts, and would appreciate some decent editing done to them.
Did I mention I'm colorblind ?

If you could be kind enough to me, I am basically just looking for any sort of general editing to be done. What I see, when I look at these, is that the area around the bikes needs to be brightened, but I don't know how to do this without brightening the entire photo, and dealing with a too-bright sky and waterline. Anything else you could think of, have at it, cropping included.
Again, thank you very much if you feel like giving me a hand. If it isn't too much trouble, a basic explanation of what you did to get the effect(s) would be much appreciated.
(my sensor isn't dirty, it's the neutral density filter. I know, i shouldn't have used it )
: )

The first one was taken by Thomas Boyd, a photographer for the Oregonian, on my camera body (XSi) with his L-series lens (taken at 150mm, idk lens specs), on a tripod. The other 2 were taken w my shitty "kit" 18-55 mm lens with no tripod in terrific gale-force wind-conditions from the Columbia : (
I'm on the far right, with black tee on.

I guess I neglected to be more specific in my original post, but i was wondering if there was a way to brighten or somewhat remove the shadows of the 2 guys wearing hats without brightening the whole picture?
btw THANKS everyone for the help
