Help

Hi,
here is my first request.
So i am at Mikeys baseball game last night and took some pics. but i have only really used the auto mode because im a little inept at the settings on this thing. i take pretty good pics but really want to be able to do some different things.
Like, getting him in focus and everything around him blurry, how would i do this?
Please make this as simple as you can, like you were telling it to a 5yo. REALLY.
Thank you.

What kind of camera are you using?

My Camera: disposable
put it on Aperture Priority (A) and set the number to as low as possible (wide open aperture). this will shorten the depth of field, making whatever you focus on be sharp, and everything else that's not at the same distance blurry (ie, things in the background will be blurry). lowest aperture for you looks like 2.8.

also, it helps that you zoom in. the effect that you want won't be as noticeable when you're zoomed out as when you're zoomed in.

considering you're camera only goes from 2.8 to 3.8 (looking at specs), zooming in will be your best bet, as increasing the focal length also contributes to shortening the depth of field.

OK so say im standing outside the fence just behind and to the right about
15ft from the subject. i want to get the batter and catcher in the frame. use the settings you advise and zoom in to the subjects. the background will be out of focus?
perfect thanks
