My Camera: Canon 5d mark II
Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM

I am looking for a new lens with a decent zoom and wanted to know if anyone has tried canon's 100-400? The only real draw back I have seen is that it is a push pull zoom.

My Camera: must take pretty pictures
Overall, it's good when you need a wide focal range, but not as sharp or fast as other zooms like the 70-200 2.8 IS or the primes. The aperture range limits the auto focusing sensativity. My next tele will be a prime

400mm 5.6

400mm 8.0

375mm 6.3

375mm 8.0

I have the 100-400, and although I haven't shot anything quite so dramatic as the images above, it's still a great lens. The push-pull works FAST once you figure out how to set the drag.

Got this one with the 100-400 a couple weeks ago. Notice the shutter speed and the zoom - the IS was really doing its job!

I didn't get to play with the lens as much as i wanted to but I was impressed with it. i am trying to decide if i should buy it or just get the 2X extender for my 70-200 2.8. Here are a few pics:

2x extender sucks. you will hate it. it slows your focusing a lot(big difference) and picture quality will be noticable lower.

Thanks Turk, I was wondering what the draw backs would be to the extender.
