Macro Photography and Lens Reversing Rings

I want to get back into macro photography but cash is a little tight to buy a new lens. I was doing some research and found that you can buy a reversing ring for your specific filter size and your lens turns into a macro one. Has anyone tried these out and have any feedback?

I used a generic one off ebay for a while. Then i got a cheap generic set of extension tubes, which have a reversing ring as part of the segments. I have had the best results with my Vivitar 50mm 1.7 which was cheap enough for me to not worry about exposing the backside to the elements when tracking down bugs and the like. It may take some extra hardware to get a true macro 1:1 ratio. Something about the length of the extension matching the focal length of the reversed lens. I dont know for sure. Some examples:
