circular polarized lens
correction: meant filter
Hey guys, this is my first post. Just bought my t1i the other day. I have the 18-55 and 55-250 lenses it came with (will upgrade once i get the hang of things). Anyways. I leave in 2 week on a pretty decent sized road trip. I have been reading non stop on photography as its all new to me. Question: I have hoya multi-coated filter right now. Should I order a polarized filter? The first part of my trip will take me up the pacific coast with the return trip down through colorado and new mexico. thanks. (btw...its gixxerjeff) and please dont suggest a $100 filter because being new to the whole photo thing, im not quite willing to spend that much...yet... |

haha welcome!
i'd go uv for now atleast for protection. if ur pinching money for the trip. its hard to use the polarizer in the dark anyway. having a polarizer is nice to have though |

Is the filter you have now a UV filter?
Do you know what a polarizer will do for you? If not, don't waste your money. If you buy a filter, go with the best. Using any additional glass on your lens will degrade your images. The cheaper the filter, the more your image will degrade. |

i know what a polarized filter will do. as mentioned before i have hoya multi coated uv filters on the lenses right now. i guess my question is...being that a lot of pictures of the trip will be of the scenery whether mountains or the pacific...should i invest in a polarized filter? i have literally been reading up as much as i can on photography in the past week. just finished a 300 page book today and returned it to barnes and noble in exchange for another.

Do you need one? No. But. If I had to choose 1 filter, it would be a polarizer. Even over a UV filter, as long as I had a hood for the lens for protection.

I'm with JayT on this one. A UV filter is ok but really how much gunk do you get on the front of your lens unless you are shooting wet, sweaty, splashing subjects up close?
The effects of using a circular polarizer can really make or break scenic shots eliminating stray reflected light or making those clouds pop in a deep blue sky. If you are still worried about the front of the lens you can leave the CP on and you will still get good pictures and the lens protection you worry about in all but the worst light where you probably should be using a tripod anyways. jeff is riding a gixer on 5000 mile trip, i doubt he'll be carrying a tripod haha i could be wrong.
but he told me he's carrying a tank bag and a tail bag, and since he mentioned its all pretty new to him this photography thing i mean, he's probably still in the early stage where he's still trying to figure out the best settings for his pictures. i assume a trip on a motorcycle stopping on the side of the road take gloves off helmet off pull the camera out of the bag take the lens cap off, take a picture put everything back to ride mode, its alot to do i think. not to mention when it gets dark he'd have to take the polarizer off put it in its case, in the bag. i think he's better off just leaving the uv filter on the camera's lens. |
