My 1st dSLR: Canon XSi w/lens kit

Alright so after much anticipation, I got to open my XSi tonight (long story, returned it unopened and re-purchased it on another card and with 8% off coupon!) and start to assemble her, and take my first photos!
So I bought the Canon EOS Rebel XSi, black/black body, with the lens kit, EF-S 18-55mm IS [image stabilization], and then got the canon hood and two lens covers, a UV clear one and a circular polarizer one at Camera World in downtown PDX (great service). Also, an 16GB class 6 SDHC card at Fry's.
Since I have an extremely limited experience with dSLR cameras (a couple shots on an XTi), I know my impressions will not be very meaningful, but I'll do my best.
The camera feels really nice, has a nice weight without feeling "hefty."
3'' LCD screen is frickin HUGE, super bright, great clarity, wow I love this thing.
I am still learning what all the controls do, but so far they seem to be (ergonomically) pretty well placed.
I don't really have any complaints as of yet, as my only issues are how to use some functions w/o having read the manual.....etc.
Below you can see my very first photos on this camera, I didn't really have much to work with as
1. it was already dark when I had it all assembled
2. we don't have fantastic indoor lighting
3. it was probably in the wrong mode, or I was operating/focusing it wrong

Anyways, I am looking forward to a great time with this camera, I have wanted a dSLR for so so long!
I will keep ya all posted on how I progress and so you can get a better idea of how it performs, and also if i encounter any issues with it.

wish this had been sharper, but shutter speed was low and he's always moving

tried to get a "profile" shot of body, lens, and hood

what I've got so far (minus camera/lens/carry strap), and a rainforest's worth of Canon booklets
