oooh I see it now... it makes me wonder if the cloud velocity was enough, could a camera on a tripod take a clear picture with moving clouds all throughout.

no. it's completely impossible. a long exposure of clouds moving? that's crazy talk.

yes. the clouds moved in between adjusting exposures, affecting the specularity of the sky in the generated hdr.

one way...

if your camera allows it, and I know your D300 does Beans, is to shoot your seen on sticks, preferably in daylight for faster shutter speeds, and set your camera up for auto bracketing from 2 under to 2 over at 1 stop increments then do a continuous high speed shutter for those 5 shots, not allowing the seen to change as much as if you did those 5 shots manually.
Just remember, this means Good sticks and head so no movment from your end while firing.
here's an example, all be it big.

^^ yes. unfortunately, my camera only brackets for 3 images at a time, and did an additional 3 at +2 stops for that first hdr image. clouds moved during that single adjustment.

stupid clouds.

here's another where the clouds aren't as noticeable. 4 images for this.
